It is always refreshing to meet young people who are making a difference in their community. Meet Nykasia Wright, who is 18, with a successful future ahead of her. Nykasia was born in South, Bend Indiana on January 31, 2000. She moved to Indianapolis with her parents as a little girl. She is the oldest of three children, she has two younger brothers Levi and Jahsan. Some know her has Nykasia but to others she is Nyke.
"At first I wasn't going to do it, but then my parents and I went to a orientation they had on campus and realized it was a great opportunity."
Nykasia attends the Indiana Academy at Ball State University, an accelerated program for junior and seniors in high school. Nyke explained that she had received an invitation in the mail about the program. "At first I wasn't going to do it, but then my parents and I went to a orientation they had on campus and realized it was a great opportunity," said Nykasia as she talked about her school. "We live on campus in a dorm basically like college students two years early". At the Indiana Academy, students take Ball State courses and finish their high school courses as well. "It's a good experience, you meet a lot of people, the course load is very hard and intense at times but it helps you in the future when being in college".
Nyke is not just a student but she is thoroughly involved in extracurricular activities in school. She is a Peers assistant, a program where seniors take the time to help with the juniors as they adjust to their new home on campus. " We had to go through training to understand the juniors for two weeks," said Nyke. This program allows the seniors to interact with the incoming juniors and build a relationship with them. "During the year we meet with the juniors as well and plan activities with them." Nyke is also apart of the International Committee, she plans along with her peers events that showcases the different cultural background
and ethnicities apart of the school. Nyke is also apart of Crusade for Christ (CRU) a Christian bible study organization on campus through Ball State.
"I feel that there are girls in our dorm that aren't comfortable or bold with their faith and I want girls to feel comfortable with expressing their faith".
While at school, Nyke felt the need to do something positive to have an impact on her peers spiritually. She wanted to share with other girls in her dorm about Christ. Her and another student started a bible study for girls to attend on campus, giving them a non judgmental environment to learn and share their faith. "I want girls on my floor and throughout the building even if they are not Christians, to come and experience the bible study for themselves", said Nyke. "I feel that there are girls in our dorm that aren't comfortable or bold with their faith and I want girls to feel comfortable with expressing their faith". She expressed that she never could imagine she would be the one to start a bible study for girls her age. "This has helped me to broaden my horizon, I never thought I would start a bible study," said Nyke. "This has helped me to meet a lot of new people and helped me personally in my walk with God". In life sometimes you have to step out on faith and that is what Nyke did and she is blessing so many people with her life.
"I want to major in psychology and in neuroscience".
Nyke has already been accepted to Ball State University and Cedarville University. She is uncertain on which school she will attend but she plans on majoring in Psychology and Neuroscience. "I feel that there is a need for people to understand mental health," said Nyke when asked about why she is pursuing these specific majors. "I know that there is a need for coming up with solutions to the issues in the community". Nyke stated that her grandmother played a big role with helping her become interested in her future majors. "My grandmother is a social worker and has always helped others with mental health behaviors and different things in the community". "She started a program called Sister to Sister in the early 2000s for young women", said Nyke. This program was formed to help young women succeed in life.
"My mom was young when she had me and always tells me to be greater and do better than her."
Nyke's grandmother isn't the only person who inspires her. Her parents inspire her to be the best that she can be. "My mom was young when she had me and always tells me to be greater and do better than her", said Nyke. Nyke's mother had her at 16. Nyke discussed that her mother has always been a person to work hard, so she can provide for Nyke and her siblings. "My mother has always worked hard because she wants the best for me and doesn't want me to settle for anything". With Nyke being the oldest and her two younger brothers looking up to her, she is very thankful that her mother is there to help them out with anything they need. "I know sometimes me and my brothers can be too much at times, but my mom finds her balance to help us, my dad, her friends and her job".
One of the strongest individuals that Nyke knows is her father. "I aspire to be strong as him one day", stated Nyke as warm smile grew across her face. "He has done a lot, and I know supplying for your family is not easy but he always makes sure that we have everything we need". As the leader of the house hold, Nyke's father is always there and committed to them. "Sometimes he gets tired but he always manages to do well and be there for us, and I appreciate him".
"One of my goals is to get through college and receive my Bachelors in Psychology and Science".
Nyke is a intelligent student that has a bright future ahead of her. She has set some goals for herself already and is looking forward to accomplishing them. "One of my goals is to get through college and receive my Bachelors in Psychology and Science", said Nyke. "I want to study abroad and do missionary work in another country, which will pertain to my career". "I want to impact my community in positive way and just make a statement by helping others".
"I am a Fly Girl because I have learned how to be bold whether it's through my education or my faith".
Nyke continues to step out of the box and be a game changer with her peers. She is not afraid to be speak about her faith and always is there to have an encouraging word. She continues to impact her generation."I want to tell people my age and younger to always set high standards for yourself", said Nyke. "Set goals that seem impossible but you can do it by working hard".
